Glastonbury MLK 39 Mural
This mural was a part of the MLK 39 initiative and was the first public mural in Glastonbury, CT. It highlights local civil rights history bringing attention to these inspiring individuals and beautiful landmarks: It highlights Sarah Wumpane, symbolizing the region’s Native American heritage, Prince Simbo’s journey from enslavement to Revolutionary War hero, and Mary Syphax’s path to freedom. The 29th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers flag represents African American soldiers in the Civil War, while Abby and Julia Smith’s legacy reflects their fight for abolition and women’s suffrage. Zandra Flemister, the first African American woman in the U.S. Secret Service, and Kirby Edmonds, a civil rights activist, are also honored. Local landmarks like the Old Cider Mill and the Connecticut River celebrate Glastonbury’s farming traditions. A quote from Martin Luther King Jr. ties it all together: 'The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
